P4P visit Groundswell Agricultural Festival

Peers joined members of the P4P team, and over 10,000 farmers, policy makers and members of the public, at Groundswell Agricultural Festival last week to learn about the important role of regenerative agriculture.

One of the key messages across the day was that a move towards a more regenerative system will make the UK and its farming sector more resilient to geopolitical and climate related pressures and shocks, such as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz which has increased the price of key inputs, like energy, fertilizer and fuel.

Peers, including P4P’s Vice-Chair and the Chair of the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee, Baroness Sheehan, met with regenerative agriculture and agroecology experts, and nature friendly farmers to discuss the policy levers that needed to be implemented to help support the sector.

They heard first hand from people working on these issues in conjunction with farmers and land managers about the benefits of a move towards a more regenerative approach, including improved soil health and retention. 

P4P Vice-Chair, Baroness Boycott, Chaired a session with Professor Tim Benton which looked at how geopolitics as well as climate risks were impacting global agriculture, and some of the issues that were likely to play out over the medium term, as well as highlighting the UKs reliance on parts of the world that are on the front line of climate change.

Peers will continue to track the implementation of the 25 Year Farming Roadmap and Land Use Framework, and push for a move towards regenerative farming through the roll out of the Sustainable Farming Incentive.
