Last week we were delighted to host the team from the National Energy System Operator (NESO), the world’s first whole energy system operator.

The team updated cross-party members of the House of Lords on how they are keeping the energy system secure and the lights on in real time, while also looking ahead to ensure progress towards a clean power system.

It was a wide-ranging discussion, covering the future low-carbon technology mix; the scale of long-duration storage needed in a future system; the role of energy efficiency, AI and data centres; nuclear power; system costs; and how we can meet our 2030 targets — and much more.

Many thanks to Lord Ravensdale for chairing, and to the brilliant team at NESO for answering all our questions: Cathy Fraser, Dr Paul Wakeley, Matthew Cox and Georgia Tinson.

"The UK’s contribution in responding to the climate crisis will be measured not just in the quantity of emissions we reduce, but in the quality of the vision, innovation and leadership we provide."
