Yesterday we were delighted to welcome Emma Pinchbeck and Baroness Brown from the Climate Change Committee to the House of Lords to brief cross-party Peers on their new report – A Well-Adapted UK.

The report is the fourth independent assessment of UK climate risk, and it sets out in detail both what the UK is already experiencing now and what it can expect by 2050: intensifying heat, growing flood risk, and drier summers with a rising risk of drought and wildfire.

The CCC also outlines practical adaptation measures that can be deployed now to address these risks – with cooling measures, flood protection, and improved water security as the three areas of highest priority.

It concludes that investing in adaptation now could pay back any upfront investments several times over their lifetimes, through a mixture of avoided damages from climate hazards, as well as the co-benefits adaptation actions could bring to improve our health, communities, nature, and our future security and prosperity.

It was an engaging discussion, with Peers asking questions across a range of topics and exploring how the report's findings can inform their work in Parliament.

We look forward to further opportunities to support Peers to work on adaptation and resilience in this Parliamentary session.

Many thanks to Emma Pinchbeck, Baroness Brown (Julia King), Stephen Dillon, Olivia Shears and to P4P Chair Baroness Kathy Willis for Chairing.
